This design is inspired by the legend of Hwitastierna (Vitastjerna), the woman from the Guta Saga whose dream foretold the birth of Gotland’s founders.

According to the saga, on the morning after her wedding night, Vitastjerna dreamed of three serpents entwining within her womb. Her husband, Hafthi, interpreted the vision as a prophecy — that she would give birth to three sons: Guti, Graipr, and Gunfiaun, the legendary ancestors who divided the island into its three ancient regions.

The serpent motif carved on the original Gotlandic stone symbolizes these sons — life, lineage, and destiny. Above them, animal symbols such as the wolf, boar, and raven likely represent the totems of each clan, linking them to Norse cosmology and tribal identity.

Gotland itself was a vital Viking hub — the heart of Baltic trade and cultural exchange connecting Scandinavia, the Baltic tribes, and the Kyivan Rus.
