About the Design
The design is inspired by a Viking Age whalebone plaque discovered in a boat burial at Scar, Sanday, in the Orkney Islands, Scotland, dating to approximately AD 875–950.
The original carving features two highly stylised animal heads. Their simplified forms leave room for interpretation - they may represent dragons or other mythical beasts, a characteristic feature of Viking Age decorative art.
Our handmade buffalo horn comb is a modern interpretation of this historical design, combining traditional craftsmanship with inspiration from Norse art.
Natural variations in the horn make each handmade piece slightly different.
