About the Construction
This helmet is a full three-dimensional reproduction of the reconstructed Sutton Hoo helmet. The body is formed from steel plates riveted together, with decorative overlays attached in a manner reflecting the segmented structure of the original artefact.
The interior is fully lined with stitched leather covering the dome, face mask, articulated cheekplates, and rear neck guard. A leather suspension liner is integrated into the crown, allowing adjustment of how the helmet sits vertically on the head. This system distributes weight and improves stability during wear.
The cheekplates are hinged and articulated to move naturally with the jaw and neck. The adjustable chin strap with antiqued brass buckle secures the helmet firmly in place.
Historical Context
The original Sutton Hoo helmet dates to the early 7th century and was discovered in 1939 in a ship burial at Sutton Hoo, Suffolk, England. Reconstructed from numerous fragments, it is now housed in the British Museum.
The helmet combines iron construction with tinned bronze panels and garnet inlays. Its face mask incorporates stylised animal forms, including a dragon motif integrated into the brow and facial structure. It remains one of the most significant surviving Anglo-Saxon helmets.
