About the Design

The original Seax of Beagnoth, also known as the Thames scramasax, dates to the early medieval period and was recovered from the River Thames in the 19th century. It is notable for bearing the only known complete inscription of the 28-letter Anglo-Saxon runic alphabet, along with the name “Beagnoth.” The meaning of the inscription remains debated; the name may refer to either the owner or the maker.

This reproduction follows the proportions of the original langseax form, characterised by a long single-edged blade and substantial grip. The etched runic inscription reflects the most distinctive feature of the historical example while maintaining a functional blade profile consistent with early medieval long knives.
