This pawn follows the simple, rounded forms associated with the Lewis Chessmen, a group of medieval chess pieces dated to the late 12th–early 13th century. Unlike the more detailed figures, the pawn keeps a minimal, solid shape typical of historical sets.
Carved from naturally shed moose antler, the material gives a firm weight and a natural surface with visible grain. The form is kept clean and balanced, with slight variation depending on the section of antler used.
Each piece is carved by hand, so small differences in shape, tone, and tool marks are part of the result. Suitable for completing a set or as a standalone piece.
Variation in colour and surface is expected due to natural material and hand carving.
About the Design
The Lewis Chessmen were found on the Isle of Lewis in 1831 and are among the most recognised medieval chess pieces. The pawns are the simplest elements of the set, reflecting practical design rather than detailed figure carving.
