Color: Antique Bone

Seated Lewis Chessmen King with sword, hand-carved from moose antler after 12th-century originals.

This chess piece is a hand-carved replica of the Lewis Chessmen King, inspired by the medieval chess figures discovered in 1831 on the Isle of Lewis, Scotland. The original chessmen are dated to the late 12th and early 13th centuries and represent some of the most significant surviving chess pieces of the European Middle Ages.

The King is shown seated, holding a sword laid across his knees — a pose characteristic of the Lewis Chessmen and often interpreted as a symbol of authority and responsibility rather than active combat. The restrained expression and compact proportions reflect medieval concepts of rulership rooted in stability and judgment.

Each piece is carved entirely by hand from ethically sourced moose antler using traditional tools. No CNC or automated processes are involved. Natural variations in grain, tone, and surface texture are preserved, ensuring that every King is unique while remaining faithful to historical material qualities.

This replica can be displayed individually or combined with other Lewis Chessmen figures to form a complete, historically consistent set.
