This bishop follows the seated clerical figures seen in the Lewis Chessmen, dated to the late 12th–early 13th century. The form typically includes a high-backed posture and simplified facial features, reflecting medieval ecclesiastical representation.

Carved from naturally shed moose antler, the material provides a solid structure with a natural grain that remains visible after shaping. The proportions are kept close to the historical pieces, with a restrained, hand-finished surface.

Each piece is carved individually, so slight differences in detail, tone, and surface are part of the process. Suitable for use in a full set or as a standalone object.

Natural variation in colour, texture, and carving detail will occur in each piece.

About the Design
The Lewis Chessmen were discovered on the Isle of Lewis in 1831 and are among the most recognised medieval chess finds. The bishops are notable for their seated form, reflecting the role of the Church in medieval society.
