This piece follows the Berserker rook type from the Lewis Chessmen, a well-known group of medieval chess pieces dated to the late 12th–early 13th century. The figure shows an armed warrior holding a sword and round shield, with a simple conical helmet.

Carved from naturally shed moose antler, the material provides a dense, durable base with a natural surface. The proportions stay close to the original forms, while the finish reflects the hand-carving process rather than machine precision.

Each rook is made individually, so slight differences in carving lines, tone, and texture are expected. The piece has a balanced weight and works both as part of a full set or as a single display item.

Natural variation in colour, texture, and carving detail will occur in each piece.

About the Design
The Lewis Chessmen were discovered on the Isle of Lewis in 1831. The Berserker rooks stand out for their warrior imagery and are often linked to Norse-influenced medieval carving traditions.
