This pendant is carved around the Hannunvaakuna symbol — a looping geometric form found across Northern and Baltic Europe for centuries. Unlike tighter Celtic knotwork, this design has a more open structure, with broad flowing lines that create a balanced, almost architectural shape.
At 5 cm, the pendant has more presence than smaller versions and hangs lower on the chest without feeling heavy. The larger size also lets the natural texture of the horn or bone stand out more clearly. Some pieces are darker and smooth, others show lighter grain or subtle layering from the material itself.
Each one is carved individually with hand tools rather than cut by machine, so the edges and curves stay slightly organic rather than perfectly uniform. The result feels closer to an old workshop object than modern jewellery.
The surface becomes smoother with wear over time, especially in horn, which develops a softer sheen through handling.
About the Design
The Hannunvaakuna, sometimes called the looped square, appears in Scandinavian, Finnish, and Baltic folk traditions and is often connected with protection and continuity. Similar forms are known from Migration and Vendel Period ornament, as well as later carvings on wooden buildings and household objects across Northern Europe.
