Hel Norse Goddess Statue – Hand-Carved Wooden Idol of Helheim

A hand-carved wooden statue depicting Hel, one of the most powerful and mysterious figures in Norse mythology. Crafted from natural linden wood in our Ukrainian workshop, this sculpture portrays the goddess with her distinctive dual nature—one side living, one side belonging to the realm beyond life.

Inspired by early Scandinavian carving traditions, this interpretation focuses on symbolism, form, and atmosphere rather than modern fantasy imagery. Hel stands as the ruler of Helheim, guardian of the dead, and keeper of the boundary between worlds.

Each statue is created entirely by hand, from the first sketch to the final carving. No CNC machines, laser engraving, or automated production methods are used. Every piece is individually carved using traditional hand tools, making each sculpture unique.

About Hel

Hel is the daughter of Loki and the ruler of Helheim, one of the realms of the Norse cosmos. She governs the world of the dead and serves as a guardian of those who have passed from the living world.

Ancient sources describe Hel as possessing a dual appearance, embodying both life and death, beauty and decay, beginnings and endings. Rather than representing evil, she reflects the natural balance of existence and the inevitable cycle through which all beings must pass.

This sculpture portrays Hel through three powerful symbols drawn from Norse tradition: her dual face, the serpents of transformation, and the scythe of mortality.

Dual Face

One side of Hel's face appears living, while the other reflects her connection to the realm beyond life. This duality symbolizes transition, balance, and the interconnected nature of beginnings and endings.

Serpents

The intertwined serpents represent transformation, renewal, hidden wisdom, and the eternal cycles of nature. Their presence reinforces Hel's role as a guardian of thresholds and change.

Scythe

The scythe symbolizes Hel's role as guardian of the realm of the dead and keeper of the natural cycle of life and death. Like a harvest tool that cuts ripe grain, the scythe represents the inevitable passage of all living things through time. Rather than a symbol of fear, it reflects transition, transformation, and the completion of life's journey.

The scythe also emphasizes Hel's authority over Helheim and her place within the Norse understanding of fate, mortality, and renewal.

From Sketch to Finished Artwork

A Unique Interpretation of Hel

Unlike many commercially produced mythology figures, this design was not copied from existing artwork or generated from popular fantasy imagery.

This interpretation of Hel was developed over many years in our workshop through sketches, carvings, and continual refinement. The final design combines elements from Norse mythology with Scandinavian folk carving traditions, creating a distinctive representation of the goddess that is both symbolic and recognizable.

The dual face, serpents, and scythe were carefully chosen to express Hel's role as guardian of the boundary between life and death, transformation and renewal.

Today this design has found homes with collectors, practitioners, and mythology enthusiasts across Europe and North America.

Our Hel statue begins as an original hand-drawn concept inspired by Norse mythology and historical Scandinavian art. The design is transferred onto carefully selected linden wood and shaped using carving knives, gouges, and chisels.

From rough shaping to the smallest details, every step is completed by hand. Natural wood grain, subtle tool marks, and individual carving characteristics ensure that no two statues are exactly alike.

Rather than pursuing a machine-perfect finish, we preserve the authentic character of traditional craftsmanship.
