Carved from linden wood selected for its smooth grain and balanced texture, allowing clean hand-carved lines and a natural surface finish. After carving, the wood is treated with linseed oil and wax, which deepen the tone slightly while keeping the surface open and tactile rather than glossy.
Tyr is one of the oldest gods connected to Germanic and Norse mythology, associated with law, oath-keeping, justice, and courage. In Old Norse literature, he is most widely known for the story of the wolf Fenrir. When the gods attempted to bind Fenrir with the magical chain Gleipnir, Tyr placed his hand in the wolf’s mouth as a pledge of trust. Fenrir bit off his hand once he realised he had been deceived, making Tyr a figure closely linked with sacrifice and honour.
The name Tyr is connected linguistically to older Indo-European sky and war deities, and scholars often consider him one of the earliest gods worshipped among Germanic peoples before the Viking Age.
The carving keeps a quiet and simple form, closer to traditional woodcraft than decorative fantasy sculpture. The grain remains visible across the surface, and the tone of the wood shifts subtly depending on light and handling over time.
Each piece is individually carved, so small differences in grain, tool marks, and surface texture naturally remain part of the finished figure.
