This figure is carved from linden wood selected for its fine, even grain and smooth carving qualities. After shaping, the surface is treated with linseed oil and wax, which deepen the tone of the wood while keeping the texture natural and open rather than sealed or glossy.
Rán appears in Norse mythology as the goddess connected with the sea and the depths of the ocean. In Old Norse sources including the Prose Edda, she is described as the wife of Ægir and is associated with storms, drowned sailors, and the unpredictable nature of the sea itself. One of her best-known attributes is her net, which she uses to draw people into the water.
In Viking-age belief, the sea was both a route of travel and trade and a source of danger, which gave figures like Rán an important place in mythological imagination. Gold was sometimes referred to in skaldic poetry as “Rán’s fire,” reflecting the custom of carrying gold into the sea as offerings or burial wealth connected with those lost at sea.
The carving keeps a simple and quiet form, allowing the grain and texture of the wood to remain visible across the surface. In changing light the tones shift naturally, from pale matte wood in daylight to deeper warm shades indoors.
Each figure is carved individually by hand, so variations in grain, carving marks, and surface texture are expected and part of the finished piece.
