This Odin statue is carved from linden wood chosen for its fine grain and balanced texture, which allows more detailed hand carving while keeping the surface natural and readable. After carving, the wood is treated with linseed oil and wax that soak into the fibres rather than forming a thick outer layer. The result is a matte surface with a soft natural feel and visible depth in the grain.
The figure is more detailed than simpler Scandinavian-style carvings, with deeper shaping in the clothing, beard, and facial structure. The Valknut symbol is included as part of the carving, connected historically with Odin, death, warriors, and the transition between worlds in Norse symbolic tradition.
Odin, also known as Óðinn, Wodan, or Wotan, was one of the central gods of Norse mythology. He is associated with wisdom, poetry, magic, battle, kingship, death, and the pursuit of hidden knowledge. In the Hávamál and other Old Norse texts, Odin is described as sacrificing himself upon Yggdrasil, the world tree, in order to gain the knowledge of the runes.
He is closely connected with ravens, wolves, spears, wandering, prophecy, and ecstatic states. Archaeological interpretation and surviving medieval texts suggest that Odin was especially important among warrior elites during the Viking Age, though his worship also extended into poetry, ritual practice, and concepts of fate and wisdom.
The statue has weight and presence without feeling decorative or polished. In daylight the wood appears lighter and dry-matte, while evening light brings out deeper honey and amber tones in the waxed surface.
Each piece is carved individually by hand, so variations in grain, carving marks, and small details naturally remain part of the finished work.
