Hand-carved moose antler replica of the Lewis Chessmen Berserker rook, inspired by 12th–13th century Norse craftsmanship.
This handcrafted rook is a detailed replica inspired by the Lewis Chessmen, one of the most iconic medieval chess sets of the late 12th–early 13th century. Carved from naturally shed moose antler, the figure represents the Berserker—an intense warrior piece equipped with a sword, round shield, and conical helmet.
The carving follows the proportions and stylistic details of the original finds from the Isle of Lewis, reflecting the artistic traditions of Norse and Scottish medieval wood and ivory work. Each piece is carved by hand at the Algizrune Workshop, with small variations that naturally occur in handmade carving and organic materials.
At 8.5 cm (3.34 inches) in height, the rook is substantial in presence while still balanced for display or inclusion in a full-size historical chess set. The surface retains a natural antler texture, lending authenticity and a tactile connection to traditional Scandinavian carving methods.
Custom commissions for full sets or individual pieces in various historical styles are available upon request.
